I hope you are enjoying reading Incantation. So far, feedback has been pretty good, which is encouraging. Now, as you continue to read, I want you to think about culture. What is culture? How do we create it? Is culture nececssary to our existence as humans? Does culture only exist when dealing with ethnicities?
What is necessary for a people to maintain their identity, their culture, and their nation? Now put yourself in a situation similar to Estrella and the other Hidden Jews, where to expose yourself for who you really are could mean imprisonment or, more likely, death? What would it take?
Lastly, I want you to think and give examples of minority groups in the United States who have maintained their unique cultures and have had to do so in a clandestine way. What are some of the things these people have had to do to maintain their cultural identities?
Although I graded the last blog in a very, very liberal fashion, I feel that the quality of the posts were substandard. Yes, this writing is very low-stakes (as I have said before), but that doesn't mean you should sacrifice quality. Think and put time into your response. Remember, your brain is like a muscle....the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Don't have a weak brain.
culture is something that people take in and believe. you create culture by listein to what people think about their culture.yes it is because everyone has culture and they listen to what their culture tells them about thereselves. No because no matter what color you are we all have different cultures. it is a good reason to keep your culture because it tells you about yourself and what goes on in your life.first it would surprise me because i have witnessed it before but i hate to do that and it would probaly surprise me alot.there is alot of different cultures in this world but they all are different because they all show different religions and stuff. they have different ones all around the world.

ReplyDeleteI think we created culture by the historical traditions our ancestors created and we call it culture because it has been remembered throughout generations.
I think culture is important as our existence as humans because that is how we learn our roots and how the world is today.
No because I believe no one knows their full blood stream and so everyone could be mixed with other ethnicities and even though we may not know it, we could be following another tradition from another ethnicity because of our same culture.
In order for us to maintain our identity, culture, and nation is to learn about our history that separated us and what brought us together.
It would take courage and bravery to expose knowing you could be facing death or imprisonment.\
Blacks have maintained culture by stereotype of the white man. Whites maintain culture by still believing blacks do all the work and works harder. Mexicans culture is represented by eating certain foods and climbing a fence into America.
A culture is the way that a group of people live. Culture is created by the way people think and their view of life. Culture is necessary, because without it, people won’t know how to live, what to do, or how to think. Culture sometimes is based on ethnic race, but it does not depend on it. Everyone thinks differently, whether they have the same culture or not, so people of the same ethnic group may have completely different cultures.
ReplyDeleteIn order for people to maintain their identity, they must stand out and know who they are. To maintain their culture, they must keep it alive by spreading similar thoughts. To maintain their nation, they must stand together as one. However, all of these require a strong spirit and mind.
African-Americans have maintained their culture by spreading it and passing it around, even though it may not have been intentionally. Now other ethnic groups share similar cultures in completely separate places. Hispanics maintain their traditions by passing them through generations.

ReplyDeleteCulture is the way of life. We create culture think that culture is by being ower selves. I think that it is important to have culture in your life. No, it has to do with the way you live. They have to stay themselves to keep their culture, identity, and their nation. They have had to lie and hide their real selves from the world.
To me, culture is the traditions and history that our families have. It is created by our ancestors who lived long before we did. People in our families just passed them down and continued to practice them. Culture is necessary to our existence because we live it every day, it makes us who we are as a person. I don’t think culture only exists when dealing with ethnicities because we may have some traditions that other ethnics have. For a person to maintain their culture, identity or nation they must learn to be themselves. For me to be in a situation where I hide who I truly am because it could lead to imprisonment or even death, that takes a lot. I don’t know how I would handle it all.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I think a culture is., a culture is a grouple of people or family that live together and speak the same language. Culture is created by the way some people live, speak, and think. Culture is based on the race of human sometimes. Everyone thinks different towards wheather you speak the same language or different skin color. In order to keep the culture alive they have to spread there culture around.To stay together they most be strong,and willing. BUt now other ethnic share very much simialir trates but in different places around the world.

Yes, culture is necessary for us humans because everyone has a certain way of living their own lives . No, culture does not only deal with ethnicities, music has culture and so does art.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important to maintain your identity,culture and nation because you always need to be yourself. You cant let other people change the way you live your life. Some peoples culture might be different from others but you still need to maintain that culture not because everyone else dosent live the same life you live. If being myself meant putting me to dealth,then i guess i would just have to die because i would want to live the life i want to live and just be who i am. Life wouldnt be fun if you had to be someone you didnt want to be so, id probably just not want to live anyways because i would be living a miserable life.
Some people in the United States are from other countries such as Mexico,China,or even from a muslim country. The people in muslim countries still maintain their culture by covering all their body except some of their face. Also, people from Mexico still eat mexican food even though they are in America now , the same goes for Asian people. They also talk in their own language which is also part of their culture.
Culture is the way that a group of people live. we create a culture by own belief and also from ideas of leader of the government ,and the view of life in their own way.I think that a culture is not necessary to have a culture because people can impress other with their own belief.Yes, I think that culture deal with ethnicities because that were people get their ideas from.To help maintain your nation,culture,and identity is to come up with Ideas that everybody is thinking about.For her to risk getting put to death is going to take alot of gut and hearts.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion culture is a set of traditions and common things between a group people. Culture is created through a bond and connection that group of people have, like things they have people have in common or people that have the same morals. I believe that in away culture is necessary to our existence as humans, everyone longs to fit in somewhere, even if they want admit it and a culture gives everyone people that they can be with and that will except them. I believe that culture does not just exist within an ethnicity; culture can be created between groups of people that have no connection through ethnicity, they can just have things in common through interests and their ideas.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been asked what is necessary for people to maintain their identity, well I believe culture is a huge part of it, but I also believe that staying true to you morals and acting on your actions instead of others another vital part of it. I believe in staying true to yourself and no matter what the danger is, I’m going to do that because my parents have always told me that staying true to yourself and what you stand for is the best thing you can do for yourself.
There are many minority groups in the United States that have maintained their unique cultures while going through very hard times. One group that comes to mind is the African American slaves, they had to meet secretly and send messages through church services to try to get their freedom knowing that if they were caught they could be killed. They did this because they were not afraid of whom they were and they were going to stand up for who they were.
Culture is what bonds a family together. It’s what keeps old and new generations connected. Culture is in your spirit. Its tradition, it’s what you and your people believe.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don’t think that somebody can just create new culture. Culture is built over time. Beliefs aren’t just created and then BAM you have a new religion or something. It takes time. Time for people to develop an understanding and truly believe. Culture is a lot like this. Culture grows over time and becomes great.
Culture is necessary. Without culture, families wouldn’t have much to claim except a last name. well not anything that truly matters if you ask me. We need culture to know where we come from and who we want to be in life. It tells who your people are. A lot of being human is to know who u are and why things go the way they do.
All it really takes to keep a culture alive is to stand up for your family history and religion and all that good stuff. Pass it down from generations.
I wouldn’t stand up for culture over death and things like that. If I know myself that I believe, why would I need to tell everybody else and possibly die?
A minority group that comes to my attention is the Indians. Cherokee. I know because I’m a part of this culture. I used to visit the reservation a lot where I used to live. People really don’t appreciate that culture, but they still keep it strong. :)
I believe that a culture is just a belief that leads us in the direction that we think we want to go and those who create a culture are just men and women who want to make an image of a society of not what they think they want, but what they know they want. Culture may or may not be nessecary for people to live but, a persons culture is the way they live and that may be something no one can live without. It does not matter what ethnicitie you are because, even Europeans have multiple cultures in their country's as well. To mantain a good faith in your own culture you must actually believe this religion.
ReplyDeleteCulture, is what people create on their own and they followed by word of tradition and belief. We create culture almost ritually, we continue to do something and we pass it on so that it may flow through generations. I think we do need culture, so that we may know where and how we started. Culture does not only exist when dealing with ethnicities, but it’s pretty much where you see it. People need to maintain their identity and their culture so they can remember and know who they are. It takes a lot of heart to be who you are when the consequences are so dire. Music is a great way to keep the culture in the minority groups in the United States, Mexicans, Blacks, and Asians all have their own type of music enjoyed by their own group. Also what these minorities eat is a great way to keep their heritage alive. Stereo Types are stupid and racist, but mostly there are true, for example…….who eats rice and beans, and who eats watermelon and fried chicken, certain minority groups. Many groups struggle to keep their culture alive because the only way they can is by their religion and that is too much of a sensitive subject to try to express. But, most of all we all fight to stay who we are.
ReplyDeleteWell i think culture is something that generation passes down to each person in a family. This teaches the younger ones what they are suppose to do, how they are suppose to do it, and why they do it. Of course culture has to exsist. ! if it didnt everyone would be different, no one would speak the same language, to me if that was so we mite as well consider ourselfs animals. ! Enthicty does not matter we can have the same culture and have different backgrounds and live in different countrys.

For me to hide who i am would be really tough, but for me to tell everyone and i have a great chance to be kille ? I think that would be the toughest thing someone would ever have to do.
Well I was once told that in other countries Jehovah wittness had to hide their religon and hide what they actually believed so they would be kilt. I undersatnd that is almost the excatly same as our story that we are reading now. This to me is a great connection because it is exactly the same. !

Culture is the way we dress, the way we carry our heads, the way we walk, the way we tie our ties, the way we talk— it is not only the fact of writing books or building houses. Culture is created by generation and over time. Yes culture is nececssary to our existence as humans so we can really know who we are and where our people come from. No it deals with everything like the example I just told about. Yes its necessary because thats what you are truly are and thats what makes a person unique because of there identity,culture,and their nation. It would take alot for me to give up who I'm truly I am really proud of my identity,culture,and nation and I have this pride in which if I go for something and I am part of I keep it until i succeded what I want no matter what. Some minority groups who in the United States have maintained their unique cultures are Mexicans in which they keep there food tradtion, music, the way they dress, there culture holidays(nations holiday), Africans in which they keep there way of dressing I mean not only just Mexicans but White,Asian,Mexican,African no matter where you come from everyone is proud of where they from and would do anything to keep there culture up and everyone has something today that reminds them were they are from and who you are by the way they live or dress or any other unique thing about there nation,culture is about!
ReplyDeleteCulture to me, is when a certain group believes in certain activities and tells their families or people to follow these beliefs until death or otherwise told different. We create culture when we start a “tradition” and expect the people or family members to follow; this may lead to a new culture being formed because these people might believe that if others do not want to do as they do, they should become another group. Yes, I do believe culture is necessary to our existence as humans because without culture our race as humans will be boring, or not worthwhile. No, culture does not deal with any certain ethnicity because anyone can have a culture, no matter their skin color or ancestors.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe it was necessary for a people to maintain their identity, their culture, and their nation because if they do not they will not be anyone. They would not be their own person. If were in a similar situation to Estrella and the other Hidden Jews I know that it would take great courage and bravery to know that if I was ever exposed, that I could either face imprisonment or worse, death, but to still practice my religion and be what I am no matter what.
One example of a minority group in the United States who have maintained their unique cultures in a clandestine way are the African Americans of the early Americas because in order to gain their freedom, they had to give secret messages, escape and actually run away to lands and places that excepted them as non-slaves and granted them freedom and safety. These people believed that they should be treated equally no matter the skin color, and they wanted their lives to reflect that. So, they had to run to freedom and continue on with their culture.
Cultrue is something that people have their traditions and how they live and the things they do. Gerantion's of people make of the way you live, the food that you, and they religion that you have and how you practice it. Culture is necessary to our existence as humans becasue withou culture we would not have the family traditions that we have told. What we do on Christmas, how we celebrate different things. How diferent familys live their lives in general. Cultrue in my opionion does not just exist in just deal with the ethnicities, because when we have Amercians that do different things and not all of them believe in center religion. Some come from a differnet background but they still are Amercians. The way they live and how they believe in one kind of religion. How we celebrate different things in our lives.
ReplyDeleteWell like the Hidden Jews I would show my true self in front of my family. They live the same life as me and I would like to do the same as my family. If I had a very close friend I would do the same and show who I truly am. If I where to hide my true self from my family and Friends I would go crazy. I like beninning myself around people. It would take me alot of courage to do this because at first I would be very scared that my friends would not like my anymore. But then they would get used to it and have no fear to be their selves around me just maybe they might come out as well. The hidden Jews have had to hid who they truly are and be scared to show who they really are. If you read the book and see that they are buring their books, paniting marks on their bodies, locking them in center places and they can go near the Christians.
Culture is the way of life based on the custom that a person follows. Culture cannot physically be created because it stays within our character; however, it can be created mentally because we often think about where we come from and trace our history. Afterwards, we might even pay tribute and show our respect to one another’s culture. Culture is necessary to our existence as humans. It is simply similar to a basic routine that we fall back to. Culture does not only exist when dealing with ethnicities because it can also exist in religion. Superstitions and religious fervor play a very big part in culture, as shown in Incantation.
ReplyDeleteThe preservation of culture is necessary for a people to maintain their identity, their culture, and their nation. Our ancestors, before the invention of computers, had preserved their culture by words of mouth and teachings. If people expose themselves for who they really are, it could mean despair or even death during previous centuries. I think that the opening scene in the book Incantation states that people should be true to themselves because, whatever they do, they cannot erase themselves for who they really are.
In the United States, the American Indians are a minority group who have maintained their unique culture and have had to do so in a clandestine way. Long before we existed, English colonists came to America and drove out the American Indians to make more land available for them. American Indians had to live covertly and hid their treasures by burying it under the ground. Later in history, we found archaeologists discovering these artifacts and placing them in museums to restore the American Indians’ culture.
Culture is the way we as humans do things throughout our time of existence. We create our culture according to our lifestyles and sometimes based on what our ancestors passed down to us. I don't believe culture only exists within ethnicities. Yes, most cultures are based upon it, but that isn't the way it is for everyone. For example, a group of friends consisting of all sorts of ethnicities could create their very own culture according to their way of life and beliefs. Many things can be and are based upon ethnicity, but not because they have to be; moreover, the way people want them to be.
ReplyDeleteIn order for people to maintain their identity, culture, and their nation, devotion is essential. Without being devoted, you aren't putting forth your all; without putting forth your all in maintaining your identity, culture, and nation, it is not going to be very successful in passing down to another generation, so to speak.
If I were in Estrella's position and had to decide whether to hide my true identity or to pretend to be something I'm not, I would definitely go with being who I am. Being the time period of the Spanish Inquisition was very dangerous for the Hidden Jews, I would imagine those who chose to stay true to their religion were loyal and courageous. If I were a Hidden Jew during that time I would be willing to die for what I believed in.
I think that culture is were you come from, what your background looks like, a history about your life, and what it means. We create culture by having a family of our on. I think that culture is nececssary to our existence, because with out our culture we would not kno our background,like if you had a grate grate grandfather in the war, you will be able to find out how long he was in there, and when he died, what his unit was, if he was a gernal or if he was he flyed over the war. I think for people to maintain their identiy they have to make sure that they do not leave their personial ID cards, or anything with their information out in the open. In Estrella's position to decide to hide or pretend who I was, I would have to go with showing my true identity. Spanish Inquisition was very dangerous of the Hidden Jews. An I also believe that if i were a Hidden Jew and during that time period I would be willing to die for what i believe in, insted of dieing believing in somehting that I know i'm not.

It is also created by how are parents influence things about our ancestors in our personal life. I think culture is necessary towards our existence as humans because culture keeps us stable in some type form, like sometimes our parents tells us, what is good and what is bad for us and we always keep that in mind. No, I think culture deals with many other things, like perhaps religion. Certain types of religion have different beliefs and some religions have different ways of living their life. I think strength and faith is necessary for people to keep their true identity and culture. If i was in a similar situation as Estrella, I know it will take a lot of bravery and courage to know that you will be either imprisoned or put to death, just because you were a Jew. There has been many minority groups in the United States that have maintained their culture while going through many difficulties. For example, slaves had to face many difficulties in order to survive because if they did something that their master didn't like, then they will be punished harshly or either put to death. Some of the stuff that they did to maintain their culture was to speak about certain stuff in secret, or some just stood up for what they thought was right.

ReplyDeleteCulture is a way that we as people share our ways with the world.Not everyone is going to be from the same culture so we get different views from other cultures.I think that culture is created by a group of people who believes in the same ways.The group can be made up of old or young pople.Yes I do think in order to have existence as humans we need culture.Case being that we as a nation will always have a different point of view about something and others will have the same point of views.So the people with the same will group themselves to fight their idea or ways.No I don't think that culture is only showed by ethnicities.It can also be shown by the different foods,languages,and styles.In order to maintain our identity, culture, and nation we need to stay together as a group adnd express what we think of things.Its important to do so because thats the way we learn about different things.Different groups that have maintain their identity, culture, and nation is the black people.Throughout history they have been mistreated and abused.
ReplyDeleteculture is the daily routine or life of a person of group. Culture is created by generations and generations of change in technology and daily life, speaking as in clothes and technology. Culture is necessary to our existence because without culture there would be nothing, we would all be nothing but everyone has a culture whether you are a couch potato or someone that lives in school. Culture does exist when dealing with ethnicity because different ethnic groups have different cultures, like African Americans and Caucasions have different daily routines and living. It is necessary for people to maintain their identity, their culture, and their nation because without these things is nothing, we cannot live without these things. If I were in Estrella's situation I would be scared to expose myself and honestly I dont think I would unless I apsolutely had to or I would die. A few minoities that have to keep themeslves secret are Arabs and Iraqies because they can be discriminated for their beliefs and ethnicities. They maintain their will power, beliefs, and culture to keep some of their own culture going

It would be plain and boring.Culture does deal with ethnicity because ethnic groups have their own cullture. For someone to keep their culture, nation, and identity i think they should stick to what they love and like to do. To confess unto my belief will take courage and faith that i would go to heaven.
ReplyDeleteCulture is what you believe in it’s the things that you do that make you different. Culture is created by the ideas that you have depending on what you believe. I think that culture is necessary for the existence of humans. I think that it is necessary because what if there were no cultures? Everything and everybody would be the same and that would be boring. Culture does not only exist when dealing with ethnicities. Your ethnicity does not mean that you are a specific culture. I think that it was necessary for people to maintain their culture. I think that it was necessary because I think that everybody should be able to believe in what they want. If I were in Estrella’s situation I would be a Jew and stay a Jew no matter what was being done to Jews because of the fact that I think that everybody should be able to believe in what they want. I would not care if we were being killed or being tortured because I should stand up for who I am and just because other people don’t like it does not mean I should change.

Culture is what you & some others believe in and the things you do. Culture is created by the ideal things come up with. I think culture is created for the existence of human beings as a whole. What if there weren't any cultures? Everyone would be out of control and some people wouldn't know what to believe in. Cultures can be a different variety of races and ethnicity. Lastly in the U.S. an example of minority are the Cherokee Indians. They were a very strong group of people & believed in so many things but now and days there aren't that many that actually believe in there selves.
ReplyDeleteCulture for me is the things people do for their people, religion, community or family. We did not create culture; it was our ancestors that started the culture because of beliefs and their ways their ancestors thought them. We just are taught and we make sure to keep our culture living and move it on to our future people. I think culture is necessary to human’s existence because without it life would be boring. For example, culture comes with celebrations, if there would not be culture in this world, there would not be any partying. Such as birthday parties, weddings, quinceañeras nor baptisms. Culture does not only exist with each ethnicities, culture is within an organization.
ReplyDeleteI think what is necessary for people to maintain their identity, their culture, and their nation is to represent who you are and where you come from. Also be proud of who you are. I do not really know what would it take two be Estrella. In the United States, most of the terrorists are said to be Muslims and they supposedly sacrifice themselves for the Muslim god. I see this incredible because these people sacrifice their own lives for their religion!
I think culture is what you live by and what you believe in. I think it is needed for us to call ourselves humans. In the stituation with the hidden jews I would not denie my culture, because it desrcibes me as a person. I would rather die for what I believe in than to hide in fear for the rest of my life. A group that I think stood up for their culture is the African American. No matter how many times people put them down they kept fight for equal rights.

Our ancestors started culture cause it was what they believed and what was taught to them as young people. I think having a culture is necessary to human existance because you can learn things about your family timeline.Every ethnicities may be diffrent but everyone of them half some kind of belief.I think it is necessary for people to maintain their identity, thier,culture,and their nation casue it represents what they are and what they stand for.

Yes it is necessary.No they can deal with more age than background.They should pass it down from generation to generation.I don't Know.They pass it down and reformed it to suit the next generation
ReplyDeleteI think that your culture is one of the most important thing in your life. Because your culture has been handed down to you from your ancesters and your grandparents look up to you to keep it running in the family. It takes alot to hide your culture, because it only takes one thing to give up your identity if you make the wrong mistake it can give it away. For a example Hispanic people they no they can go to jail if they get caught crossing the U.S and Mexico boarder so they attend to stay in someones house use a fake name or ID.
