Hello, dear ones.
There's a saying that goes, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." In very difficult circumstances some people do indeed get going. They have a spirit that pushes them ahead- pushing them to their limits and allowing them to do things they didn't think possible. What makes these people so tough, so strong in spirit? Why do they turn out to be so good? Why do others go so wrong, and lastly, WHAT TYPE ARE YOU? Be honest.
Now read one of my favorite poems by Langston Hughes called "Mother to Son":
Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor-
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now-
For I'se stil goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
Awesome poem, right? Now here's what I want you to do with it: Do you think Mrs. Jones and the mother in the poem have the same approach to life? Tell me why or why not. How about you? Do you have the same approach? If you want to tell me why or why not, that's totally fine, but due to the (maybe) personal nature of the question, you don't have to elaborate (for a change).

To me I think that they do have the same approach to life because both are strong women and probably had to go through a hard life and had to survive off little things that they were given. I think I do some what, because I am a strong person but I don`t think that its because I had a Hard Life because really my life is and was great as a child so I really would say I have that same Look towards Life.
ReplyDeleteI think what makes people so tough is what they have been through. The struggles and problems they went through make a person tough and can take anything that anyone or anything throws at them. I think people turn out to be good because I guess they dont want to get put through any other hard circumstances, so they are dedicated to do anything to live a better life. Others go wrong because they can't deal with all of it that they feel the easier way out is to just quit and go with what life throws at them and just not do anything to change it. T hink i'm a tough person. I havent been through exactly anything really hard, but I have been through hard stuff. And i feel i am going threw a good road and i hope i still stay on it.
ReplyDeleteI think they do have the same approach to life. They ahve the same opinion that life is hard and it isn't meant to be easy. I feel the same way and I think that life is hard and you have to be willing to sitck to it and not give up. I really agree with the poem and the quote.
Yes, I beleive that they are both coming from the same perspective that life is bumpy but you just have to keep going. For example Mrs. Jones didn't dwell on the past and let Roger go as the mother told her son to keep on going. And yes I believe that you should not dwell on the past because the isn't going to help you with now or later. And the reason I think so is because I used to dwell on the past but that just dragged me down farther than I needed to go.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do the think the mother and Mrs. Rogers have the same approach in life because they both kept going. They never stopped; but when something hard came along or something difficult, they would just try their hardest and keep going. Yes, I do have the same approach in the life but my approach has some different views. If, I don't think I can go any further I can go to my friends or family and ask for help. I also will help my friends or family if they come to me when something isn't going right. Some peoples approach might be different or the same. It doesnt matter to me but i think this is the best way to deal wiwth a situation "when the going gets tough".
ReplyDeleteI believe they both went through hard times. I really like this poem, I’ve been through a lot and I’ve heard that a lot. “Don’t give up”, “don’t run away from your problems”. And I haven’t. But some times its hard. And the poem is saying that I’m not the only one who has to deal with hard times and that there are others going through things too. If they can fight through it and come out strong then so can I.

ReplyDeleteI believe that Ms. Jones and the mother in this poem do have the same view on life. The main reason I think this is because Ms. Jones told Roger that she had done some things in her past that were not so great and that everyone has something in common but, she turned out ok and the mother in the poem is telling her son of how she has had to suffer through many things to get where she is today but, she kept on going and that her son should do the same when it came to his life. I believe that both wise women are saying that even if you make mistakes or have to wrestle through a tough time, you still must keep going to prosper through your life. I, myself have the same approach to my own life because I believe that without obstacles and mistakes you cannot learn anything from life and if you do not keep going after you face this hard ships you will never have a successful life. The more that happens in your life and the more things you are able to get through, the stronger you will be for yourself and the people the matter the most around you.

ReplyDeleteThey do have the same approach to life. Because they have gone thought hard times and events in their life, they have both over come those things. They had go through a hard life. I don’t think I have the same look on life because life has been easy. The hardest thing I’ve had to do is go to school and make good grades. And where you said that the peom was awsome, I think you ment it was a groovy peom.
To me, what makes people so tough is their past and what they have been through. I think they turn out to be so good because they learn from their mistakes. They know how to change themselves for the better. Others may go wrong because they don’t know how to make the right decisions. They may not want to change themselves because they like how they are living their live as it is. I believe that I am the good for I try my best to learn from the mistakes I have made and try to improve myself as a person.
ReplyDeleteI liked the poem a lot; I can see that there is a connection between Mrs. Jones and the mother in the poem. They both keep going on with life even though it can sometimes get tough. They both explained to someone that they should never turn back and always try. I really don’t know if I have the same approach or not. I know that I want to. I don’t like to look back on the past, I just want to keep looking forward and not turn back when it gets rough.
i think they are both are dealing with the same thing. Life isent easy. It has its bumps and ruts. You jus have to work through it and make the best of it no matter what comes up. Because if you just sit there and do nothing, your not getting nothing accomplished. I am that same very way. It might take a while to get going, but eventually im going to do it because it has to be done. I really, really might not want to do it, but its gotta be done,so why not just go ahead and get it out the way.
ReplyDeleteYes, i think Mrs. Jones and the mom are going throught the same kind of problem. THey both are trying to teach and show the young boys, that you cant always try and take what you wont in life, you have to work for it. THey were trying to tell them good advice on how to be good people. And that you should never turn back on what you got your mind set to. Even if you think you cant do it just try your best at it and chances are you will succeed. I am using that same approch because sometimes i believe that i cant never do what i wont to do in life because it takes a lot to get there. But i know that you can set your mind to anything you wont to do long as you have faith in yourslef, and everything thing will go ok for you.
ReplyDeleteI think that going through hard times makes people so tough because being through hard times makes you more aware and experienced so you know how to handle things and it makes you tougher to what is to come. Honestly I am kind of both, I am still sensitive to hard times but each time I go through a tough experience I get tougher and know how to handle it the next time around. I think the mother and Mrs. Jones have the same outlook on life. I do too because I know no matter what happens everything will turn out ok and I am still going through some hard times, my parents are getting divorced, bad relationships and I know that some of my friends may not realise it but they are the ones that get me through it all, and even though times can get tough, it is a big part of life that we just have to get over and live through.

ReplyDeleteWhen people are at bad times in their lives and they hear the saying "When the going gets tough,the tough get going" maybe they think that if you are negative about the situation or dilemma that you are in then it will just get worse, so they think positive about it and keep going.
ReplyDeleteOthers go wrong by thinking negative about things and telling themselves that they cant do something which already sets yourself up for failure because you've already made up your mind and will get nowhere,just back to where you started. When things get bad for me in my life,I honestly just give up and tell myself that i will never be good enough which is pretty bad but ive been trying to improve on that and not get so down about things or worry too much. A few of my friends help me through my hard times and I can talk to them about it which makes me feel better because not many people understand me or take the time to do so.
Yes, I do think that Mrs. Jones and the mother in the poem have the same view on life because they both want whats best for the boys. I also have the same view because I want to have a better life for my kids then what ive had and I want whats best for me and do what makes me happy.
I think what makes people so tough comes from what they been through. You build up the strength of the spirit by living through tough things, it just makes you stronger. I really do not know how they turn out good and bad! I think I am in between tough and weak because sometimes I can handle difficult situations, but sometimes I cannot. I think they do have the same approach in life because they think the same way about life and both think that life is hard and full of difficult stages. I agree with the same, life is not easy and it was not meant to be. It was meant to be difficult to make you stronger and learn things throughout life. If life were easy, people would be total failures with no knowledge.
ReplyDeleteTo me I think they do have the same approach in some ways.Because both Mrs.Jones and the mother might have had some difficult times in their lives. For example the mother is trying to tell her son to not give up no matter what happends in life.Mrs.Jones is trying to tell Roger that he shouldn;t do bad things that could hurt people in the long run.Both ladies are trying to show or tell the boys a message about life that they could part take in life.To me I think I do have the same approach in life because Iv'e had hard times but I never stop trying to be a better person.my mother always told me to never give up no matter what happends that everything happends for a reason.Weather its to get you some where or to show you a lesson so I took that as I grew up in life.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the saying “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” People who do indeed get going, during difficult times, have determination that allows them to surpass their limits and allowing them to do things they did not think possible. They have the willpower and the strength of mind to pass through this tough goings. These individuals have their own unique set of good intentions and usually aim to do what is right; however, others go so wrong because they are too focused on getting through the goings that they do not remember to have fun along the way. I do believe that I’m tough during difficult circumstances mostly because I remain positive most of the time.
ReplyDeleteI do think Mrs. Jones and the mother in the poem have the same approach to life. Mrs. Jones, in the story Thank You, Ma’am, mentioned that during her youth, everything in her life is not organized and neatly delineated similar to the stairs that the mother in the poem described. She had worked very hard to get where she is now. I have this same outlook on life. Although the steps in my life are not elaborate or crystal clear, I still keep going ahead though I never questioned myself if those little steps can make a difference in my future.
I think what makes people tough because of such positive things around them.They turn out so good because they dont let anything get in there way.And some people go wrong because they think about it to much and worried about such a small thing that they make it into a big thing.I am one of those person that i dont let anything get in my way even if in the inside its killing me but happy from the outside I think because I am a really happy,positive person,and dont let nothing get in my way and not worried about anybody but me,myself,and I. I think yes because both persons been through thick and thin and knows how life havent been so good for them and wants the best for the boys then as what they had.And for myself I think yes too because I had a hard life to and life havent been easy for me I been through dark and light and poor and rich it just like the poem that describe the way I am I had realize thats noone is perfect even if you try your best to be but you cant and in my opionion I think everyone been through up and downs.
ReplyDeleteI think by you going through those tough times is what helps the going times become the best.What makes them so good is that they bascially know what the bad times and they try and push thereselves so they can't get back in that position.What makes it so bad is that they let the little things get at them the most and let it mess them complete up.And myself i think I would be at when the tough gets going because as I said I am one of those people who lets little things getthe best of me.
ReplyDeleteI would say they do have the same approah because they both have probably had the worst in life and now a days it's becoming better no matter how old they are.I can honestly say I do because I have been at the worst stage in life but I had to learn how to buit up from that position and im sure many people have those hard times in life but it's for the better.
I believe that theses people are so tough because they have had a bad life from the start, and they are use to the tough times. Theses times are not new to them so they just roll with the punches, because if they do not they will just crack, they will crack under the pressure.
ReplyDeleteI believe the others go wrong because they have been sheltered all there life and they have been protected from reality. Then when times gets rough when they have met the real world they do not know what to do, and they break they might turn to drugs, kill themselves, it all depends on how tough the situation is.
I believe that I am the type that will roll with the punches; I have seen the real world my parents say I need to be prepared for the real world.
I myself think the two women are the same neither one of there lives have been easy. They still keep on trucken on; they do not let anything bring them down. They do not sit down and take a break when they are tired of life they just suck it up and keep going.
Well now me, I do kinda have that approach to life because I have went through a lot in my life, but I have always been told to never let anything get me down. As the beat rapper said, “keep ya head up”
I believe what makes people tough is what they go through in life. I would say something like life lessons that teaches you what’s right and what’s wrong. Most people turn out good through bad choices that they have made in the past. Others go wrong because they don’t think that they do anything wrong. I personally think that I know that I do things wrong but majority of the time I watch what I do. I love this poem because it’s a good example of what you going through in life but basically telling you that it’s not going to be so easy. I think that they have the same perspective on life, since their both trying to teach the boys a lesson about life. I agree with the poem and Mrs. Jones because you have to strive for something that you want. It’s not just going to be out there for you to get. If everything was easy in life everybody would be successful.

ReplyDeleteMrs. Jones is giving advice to the mother is seems and telling her not to give up and keep trying not to make the dame mistakes she did, and to be careful with her life cause you only get one. In my opinion I would be like Mrs. Jones giving advice for someone else to take so that they dont make the same mistakes. I would feel better knowing that I just helped someone with there life and to make it better. It also depends if there in a problem that you have been in then you could really understand and help.

And yes, because they are both teaching a young boy and a young son when he has a tough time dealing with life, and also a mother who has been down the rough road is teaching her son to move forward in life, and the message that Mr. Jones and the mother are giving to the boys is that to be strong and move forward no matter how hard the challenges they face in life, and also the form of the mothers advice to her son was to not give up just because the path in life is rough and hard. And, yes I think I have the same approach.
ReplyDeleteI think some people are strong in spirt, because they are really determine to what they are going for and what makes them make good decisions is that they never back down and never give up. What makes others bad is that they easily give up and never think about the conseqences that follow their actions and decisions. I am a strong spirted person. ReplyDeleteIn the expression above the pepole that are tough that it speaks about have motivation. The things that motivate some of these tough pepole are things like “I’ve came this far what would be the point in going back now?”, these are things that make pepole tough in spirit and help them tough it out in the long run.These pepole turn out with a great life because they were able to tough it out and go throug with some good decisions even though it might get tough at times.The pepole who can’t tough it through some good things like school and college for example feel the turned out wrong. As for what type I think I am I think im someone who can tough it out. I’m not one for quiting something once I’ve started it.Comparing Mrs.Jones and the mother above in the poem I think they share the same approach. They both seem to want to help a younger soul have success in life.

The lady in the poem knows that life is hard, Mrs. Jones knows that life is hard as well, maybe that is one of the reasons she didn't take Roger to jail. They both are strong, the lady in the poem said she has been in places where there wasn't any light, but she didn't give up or get angry, just like Mrs. Jones who seen that Roger has been in the same places, she didn't give up on him, she took him in and kinda encouraged him a little bit, let him know that there is still some kinda light out here in the world.
ReplyDeleteYes I have the same approach on life, if I didn't I would have given up on the whole early college program, during the first three weeks. I don't think people should just give up, to me that just ruins the competition in life, sucks all of the fun out of living, it just takes away from things to look forward to.
I think the tough people are so strong in spirit because they have something to look forward to when they are striving for something. They turn out so good because they keep going even when it is too hard and tough, they push for their goal. Others go wrong because when it gets hard, they figure it must not was meant to be. I will keep going, no matter how hard it is. I feel there is something good for me once I get to where I’m going.

I won’t try to cheat my way out of it, but instead use that opportunity to get better and achieve my goal.
To me I think you dont have to have a hard life to be a stong person you could have seen people thats in your life go through somethings.You can also be a strong person in your own way. But the strong people sometimes know what they want out of life. Others go wrong because they are scared to try and do something goog for once. They are strong because they don’t give up as they go through the hard times and they battle it out the entire way. They turn out to be so good because their life experiences have shaped them into the person they are; a person who is stronger and wiser because they know what it’s like to feel pain and loss, to battle with their own conscience and well-being. They also know what it’s like to want so desperately to escape their problems and wants there to be someone by their side whom they know they can depend on. They want better for themselves and know deep down that after all the fighting they deserve to have their time of happiness and are driven to work to achieve it.
ReplyDeleteOthers go so wrong because they get consumed with self-doubt and negative energy and influences that they find it impossible to look beyond. They don’t take the time to see pass the tough experiences and obstacles that life throws at them and they don’t believe in themselves enough to find a way out; to make a better life. As a result, they turn to more negativity and instead of building themselves up they dig themselves a deeper hole. They may not see a reason to keep trying when possibly all they have ever known is pain, disappointment, dishonesty, betrayal, etc. They also may not have anyone to encourage them.
Honestly, I am strong spirited. Although I do have my times of self-doubt, I always pull through in the end. There are a lot of unfair things that I have been through but I do keep in mind that out there somewhere, someone has been through worse; someone could be going through worse and for as long as I can I am going to do what it takes to get through it without giving up.
I believe the Mother and Mrs. Jones share a similar approach because they both went through hard times in their life and used their knowledge from the experiences they had as a drive to keep going forward while also keeping faith. They are both clearly strong women because they haven’t let obstacles bring them down and they know enough about a tough life to try to prevent others from giving up.
What makes certain people strong in spirit is their mind. They don’t give up because they believe that they can do anything. They are not afraid to fail as they are pushing toward success. Others do not have that kind of courage and give up right when one little thing goes wrong. Those people are usually scared easily and don’t have the confidence in themselves to keep moving if they are failing. I am mostly the “keep trying” type, because even if the circumstances are hard to meet, I still push forward and do the best I can. Mrs. Jones and the mother in the poem “Mother to Son” have the same approach to life, because although they have gone through some hard times, they are still moving on in life. I have the same approach because I have gone through hard times as a child, but now I am living a good life.

Some people take things as setback and others take it as an obstacle or a challenge that life has put in front of them. Now in this world there are strong people and there are weak ones too. The weak ones who go through these problems never get over what they’ve been through, while the strong ones never forget about too but they learn from their mistakes and have successful life. I may act like my life is nothing and it’s like any other but I have been through a lot and I’m still not over about the things that have happened to me, in fact I’m still going through hard things now and I am managing to evade or just deal with the problem. So life isn’t easy it was made to be hard so that you would be a better person. So never give up in the end if you “will ‘’ not try but will you can do something out of yourself. I agree with this poem and the quote

These people turn out to be good because of their self confidence on the other hand people with negative views turn out to do badly. I think that I am a little of both because even though I am confident in myself sometimes there are things that I am afraid of. I think that they do because Ms. Jones did not get very and at the boy because she knows that he is going through difficult items and the mother in the poem also knows that there are times in your life when you will not know what to do. I think I do have the same approach because I also know that there are times in life when you will go through difficulties and you will not know what to do. Even though I do think this I don’t think that you should let yourself down because of the wrong things you do in your life, instead you should learn from them and keep going.
ReplyDeleteWhen the going gets tough some people do get going because it’s who they are and that’s characterized by the way they act and think and how they express it. I include myself when I say “They” because my brain doesn’t kick in mostly until there is a situation at hand that must be solved. My brain works and feeds off of the rush, but I can also work during a regular day and that sets me apart from “them”. Those who succeed by their inner spirit do so by planning ahead and because they try, harder than others do harder than you do (the readers). Also I do think that Mrs. Jones is like the mother in the poem because she had a bad life that wasn’t too easy but she still looks at the bright side and keeps moving on.
ReplyDeleteI think that they isn't the same because they can look at thing different like one person might like one thing and the other might dnt like it yea they might go through hard times but one person might call something hard times and it might not be hard times to the other person. I personal don't think i am because I am a very strong person and I really push my self to reach my goals. My life is not perfect but i'm noting going to let really bad things thats going on in my life stop me from reaching my goals.
ReplyDeleteFor me I think people have their own strong spirit and feelings because, people have to be tough sometimes because they have to go through a lot but most of the times you got to be tough. The weak ones always suffer and never get over there self’s. So you get things faster when you are tough. And you get the better things. Because people know that they should respect you and not mess around with you so there is a lot of things that can be better when you are tough.

ReplyDeleteTo me I think that the mothers are the same. I think this because they both want a child to succeed in life and be something instead ofo being on the streets or ending up in jail. I have the same acception for these mothers. I wouldn't want my child to be on the streets or in jail; I would wan thim doing something that he likes and is good at. I would want him to be someone in life and set goals for themselves.
ReplyDeleteI believe the mother and mrs.jones are related because they both went through a rough life when they were young which helped them become stronger and move on with life.It also help them learn their mistakes so they can improve in life succeed better.I relate to this because my mom gets on me alot to do to the right thing and to better.She gives me a hard time because she knows what im capable of doing and if i was grown I would be the same wit my child because i would want him to be betta than me and i would want to do things that inspire him to better not make him do worster.I would want him to hang wit a good influence not no one who incourages him to do some hes neva did or changes the way he act.
